Abstract
This book is the first full-length intellectual biography of John Venn, the British logician and mathematician best known for the development of Venn diagrams. Lukas M. Verburgt situates Venn’s work within the broader context of nineteenth-century British science, philosophy, and religion.
The study explores Venn’s contributions to logic and probability theory, showing how his ideas emerged from debates about inductive reasoning, scientific method, and the foundations of knowledge. It also examines his engagement with issues such as empiricism, theology, and the relationship between science and religion during the Victorian era.
Beyond his famous diagrams, the book highlights Venn’s role in shaping modern logical thought and his influence on later developments in mathematics and philosophy. It also sheds light on his personal life, academic career at Cambridge, and the intellectual environment in which he worked.
Overall, the work presents Venn as a key figure in the transformation of logic into a modern scientific discipline, offering insight into both his life and the historical development of logical and mathematical reasoning
