Abstract
The book Trends of the Times: The Historical Role of the Communist Party of China examines the historical development and significance of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in shaping modern China and responding to global historical trends. It argues that the rise and leadership of the CPC is closely connected to the major political, economic, and social transformations that occurred in China during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
The book explains how the CPC emerged during a period of national crisis, foreign domination, and social upheaval in the early twentieth century. By adopting and adapting Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin’s Marxist ideas to Chinese realities, the party mobilized workers, peasants, and intellectuals to pursue national independence, social revolution, and modernization. The narrative highlights the Party’s leadership in the revolutionary struggle, the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, and the transformation of China’s political and economic systems under socialist principles.
A major theme of the book is that the CPC’s success stems from its ability to integrate Marxist theory with China’s specific historical conditions and practical challenges. The Party continually adapted its policies—from revolutionary struggle to socialist construction and later economic reform—to respond to changing domestic and international circumstances. This process reflects the broader idea that Marxism evolves through practice and historical experience rather than remaining a fixed doctrine.
