Abstract

This book provides a historical and contemporary overview of Xinjiang, an autonomous region in northwestern China. It examines Xinjiang's historical development, geographical setting, ethnic communities, political and social conditions, and economic development. It seeks to explain the region's historical relationship with China and discusses contemporary issues concerning stability, development, ethnic relations, and social and economic change. The work combines historical background with discussion of present-day Xinjiang and includes a bibliography.
