Abstract

This book examines the historical development, achievements, and underlying factors of China's reform and opening-up since 1978. Edited by Chuntao Xie, the book seeks to explain why China's reform process produced profound economic, social, political, and institutional changes over four decades. It traces the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics while examining major dimensions of China's transformation, including economic development, socialist democracy, cultural development, improvement of people's livelihoods, ecological civilization, opening to the outside world, national defense, national unity, and the creation of a peaceful environment for development.
